Posted November 06, 2019 11:08:25The NFLPA has called on players to stand and chant during the national anthem during games.
That stance has angered players who say they are not allowed to express their emotions.
The NFL has yet to respond to the union’s request.
But the league has already been embroiled in a controversy with its anthem protests and a report that it is considering making players wear black masks during games, a move that could make it harder for players to join in protests.
The league, led by Donald Trump, has faced a backlash from players who have said it is disrespectful to the flag.
It has also been accused of creating a climate of violence that contributes to the rise of hate crimes.
The union’s push for a ban comes as the NFLPA announced plans to unveil a new ad campaign that would highlight the dangers of racism.
The group is calling for players who don’t stand to be more visible to counter the growing number of violent acts committed by white people against black people.
It also said it would host a week-long conference on racism.
“As NFL players, we are also human beings who have the ability to peacefully express ourselves, but our rights cannot be sacrificed on the altar of the national flag,” the NFL said in a statement.
“The NFL is a global leader in addressing racism and anti-Semitism.
The NFL needs to be a beacon of hope for all who have suffered at the hands of others, and a place for people of all backgrounds to come together to address and fight racism.”
