The 49ers have hired former Baltimore defensive coordinator Tony Sparano to be their defensive coordinator, the team announced Friday.
Sparano, who previously served as linebackers coach in Baltimore, was the Ravens’ defensive coordinator from 2011-13 and led them to a Super Bowl appearance in 2016.
In addition to being a defensive coordinator in Baltimore and Baltimore Ravens territory, Sparanno has coached the New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals.
He also coached the Houston Texans and New Orleans Saints.
The 49ers also added former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator George Edwards to replace Brian Cushing.
In announcing the hire, 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said the 49er defense was in a transition and needed a change of scenery.
The 49er offense needs a spark, and this is a great fit for the team, Baalke added.
