The Buffalo Bill is a team that’s never really looked like a contender since it was drafted to the NFL in 1990.
The team was never going to be a contender in the first place, as the Bills only had a .543 winning percentage over that stretch.
And they’ve never really been good, either.
The Bills are the third-worst defense in football over the last three years, according to Football Outsiders, and they’ve ranked last in rushing defense (5th) and total defense (16th) over the same span.
The defense is not the only thing that’s been a problem for the Bills over the past three seasons.
Buffalo is one of the worst teams in the NFL for yards per play (2.79) and points allowed per game (35.8), but they also rank 22nd in the league for total defense.
It’s a problem the Bills defense faces, but it also looks like it could be worse than expected.
The Buffalo News recently wrote that they had been working on a plan to address the issues the Bills face.
According to the Buffalo News, Bills GM Buddy Nix and head coach Doug Marrone had been discussing a plan in recent weeks.
“I think it’s a really big problem, honestly,” Nix said.
“The defense isn’t a great unit.
The pass rush isn’t great, and it’s just an area we’re not playing well.”
Nix is referring to the Bills pass rush.
They ranked 28th in pass rush DVOA in 2016, but their pass rush was good enough to rank second in the entire NFL last season (24th).
This year, the Bills ranked 21st in pass rushers DVOA, so it’s not that the Bills have been getting the worst pass rush from the pass rush group this year.
But they’ve struggled in that area this year, and that could be a problem.
There’s also the fact that the pass ruses for the last few years have been pretty bad.
There have been four teams that rank worse than Buffalo in pass defense DVOA this year: the Jets (10th), Colts (12th), Seahawks (13th), and Bears (14th).
And this is all before we get into the offensive line.
Buffalo’s offensive line has been struggling since the start of the season.
They rank 25th in adjusted sack rate, 26th in yards per attempt, and 28th out of 32 teams in sacks per game.
There are a lot of reasons why Buffalo is having problems at the line, and there’s a lot that could change with the offseason.
But the Bills’ offensive line could be the biggest problem facing them in 2018.
The best thing Buffalo can do is improve their pass protection.
That means improving the run game.
That could be difficult, especially considering the way they rank in both run blocking and run blocking efficiency.
The Titans, Seahawks, Bears, and Packers all rank in the top ten for run blocking in terms of run blocking.
The Patriots rank first, with a total of 2.79 yards per carry allowed per play.
So it’s possible that the best thing the Bills can do for their pass defense is to get more pressure.
That would be nice, but the Bills still need to improve their run defense to get there.
The problem for Buffalo is that they’re also ranked 25th on the NFL’s run defense efficiency chart.
If they were to improve at their pass rushing, then Buffalo’s run blocking could improve even more, which would make it even better for them to improve.
But it won’t be easy.
The running backs for Buffalo have been good in 2017.
They have the third best average rushing yardage of any team, and Buffalo ranks fifth in rushing yards per game in 2017 with a ridiculous 5.45 yards per rush.
So that’s going to take a lot more work, especially if the Bills are going to make any significant strides in 2018, especially in the run front.
It could take some time for Buffalo to improve the run defense, but they could make some significant strides by improving their pass coverage.
The worst-graded cornerback in football is now Buffalo’s second-best cornerback, behind only New England’s Devin McCourty.
In 2017, Buffalo ranked 11th in the pass defense efficiency charts for cornerbacks.
But McCourtty was an excellent secondary player.
He was a top 10 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
Buffalo had the sixth-best coverage grade for cornermen in the 2017 NFL Draft, and McCourts pass coverage was second-to-none in the draft class.
If Buffalo could get better in the coverage department, they could be very dangerous in the secondary this year too.
But if Buffalo can improve their cornerbacks play in the box, they have a lot to build on from the secondary.
The two biggest issues facing
