A lot of players take the league’s high-pressure, defensive-minded style of play for granted.
But some of them — like running back Ray Rice — are just not ready for it.
In his weekly “NFL Week in Review” podcast, Florio breaks down what it takes to play in the high-stakes, fast-paced world of the NFL.
Florio says his advice for the New York Giants running back is to understand that he’s just another guy.
He’s got the same amount of talent as other NFL players, he just isn’t in the same category.
He adds, “When you’re in the top-level, top-10 position, it’s not like you’re doing this for fame or any of that.
It’s just for the love of the game.”
Here are some of the best and worst things about being an NFL player:NFL Week In Review – 10/27/16Mike Florio: The New York Jets have one of the most impressive defenses in football.
How did they overcome the pressure to win a Super Bowl?
Ray Rice, Rice: “I would just say, it was a great year for me.
I think it’s just a team effort.
We had to be ready for whatever was thrown at us.
We were prepared to handle whatever the situation was.
I didn’t expect anything, so I was ready to go.
It was just about getting to the Super Bowl and doing it.”
Kelvin Benjamin, Benjamin: “The one thing I really think about when I’m watching the games is the intensity.
You have guys on the edge.
They’re getting drilled.
It really comes down to being mentally tough and being mentally focused.
That’s what you need to do, too.”
Terence Newman, Newman: “It’s a lot of pressure, especially with guys like Rashard Mendenhall and Dontari Poe and Ray Rice, who were really aggressive.
They were just out there to make a play.
I just think they needed to stay in the game and play well.”
Bobby Wagner, Wagner: “One thing that’s great about this league is the competition.
I’m sure we can all agree it’s a great league.
There’s always going to be a lot more guys out there that can get better.
I don’t think it was any different this year, except that there was more competition for the top spots.”
Marlon Mack, Mack: “For me, the biggest thing is just to be focused and stay focused on the game.
I know the Giants were in that same spot as well.
It wasn’t the biggest game, but it was just another day in the life.
The game’s never going to go away, and that’s fine.
You can get over it.
You’re going to have to work at it.”
