Posted December 03, 2018 09:18:30The Australian Government has announced it will spend $10 million on an advanced home defense weapon, which will be used by the Defence Force in response to domestic security situations.
Key points:The $30m weapon will be supplied by an Australian firm, Defence Industry Australia”This will allow the Australian Government to provide Australia’s armed forces with an extremely reliable and cost-effective home defense system that will be capable of meeting all contingencies and responding to the threats that we are facing,” Defence Industry Minister Paul Fletcher said in a statement.
The $10m, multi-purpose home defense device will be delivered through a contract with the Defence Industry Corporation, which manufactures the AIM-120G Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile, the Government announced.
Mr Fletcher said the system was not an air defence weapon, but a defensive system, and it was an upgrade from Australia’s existing air defence systems.
“The AIM is designed to meet a wide range of threat scenarios from land, air and sea, including ballistic missile launches and aircraft,” he said.
“Its ability to respond to threats from land and air is an essential capability of our defence capability, and is a critical element of our national security.”
This is an upgrade of our existing AIM, and we are proud to be delivering this capability to Australia’s Armed Forces.
“He said the Defence Minister’s Office was working closely with the company, who are based in Queensland.”
We will continue to monitor developments to ensure the AAM-120A is able to meet our requirements and is capable of performing in all circumstances, including in a variety of environments,” Mr Fletcher said.
The Defence Minister said the new weapon was a “significant step forward” in Australia’s defence capabilities.”
Australia’s armed force has been engaged in a constant state of heightened threat since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks,” he added.”
It is an important time for us to strengthen our defence capabilities and to make Australia an even more secure, secure, and secure country.
“As a result of these developments, Australia is now in a better position to meet the challenges that we face.”
The Minister said Australia had a long-standing commitment to the development of a robust defence capability and would continue to be committed to making Australia a force to be reckoned with.
“With this upgrade, Australia will be able to better defend our country, its people and our interests around the globe,” he noted.
“And we will be stronger as a nation and as a people.”
In the years to come, we will look back at this decision with pride, and recognise the importance of the defence investment Australia has made in this country’s defence capability over the last 50 years.
